CAREER DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE - Year 2008

Director:
Joe Pitzl, joe@accredited.com

Committee Members:
Denny Bennett; Paul Bennett; Austin Colby; Mike Miller; Nicholas Thunker, and Ben Wacek

PASSION STATEMENT:
The Career Development Committee provides FPA members in all phases of their financial planning career opportunities in the areas of employment, education, professional development/leadership, and community involvement. We draw job seekers and employers together with Career Day, assist people in developing their careers with various scholarships and connect planners looking to advance their careers through Communities of Practice.

Foster Trust:
Trust begins with open and honest communication, coupled with detailed expectations of all committee members. Members of this committee must be accountable to each other, and to the vision we have established together. The values of shared responsibility, leadership, and purpose will all be employed at our structured, monthly meetings.

Vision:
Our goal is to provide FPA members in all phases of their financial planning careers opportunities in the areas of employment, education, professional development/leadership, and community involvement.

Developing Strategies and Timeframes:
  • The Career Development Committee will administer an annual Career Day program to aid in supporting those who are looking to enter our profession, be they students or career changers. This format will also provide a unique opportunity for employers to have direct access to a talent pool looking to enter the profession.
  • The committee will administer the scholarship program to promote the attainment of the CFP® designation. We will review all scholarship requests to ensure recipients meet stated criteria. We will explore new ideas for funding scholarships.
  • The Career Development Committee will continue to review the current scholarship programs.
  • The Career Development Committee will work with its counterpart committees to provide educational programming that aid in the professional development of our members in chapter meetings and the Bridge-The-Gap/Financial Essentials sessions at the annual Symposium.
  • The Career Development Committee will support the FPA in its efforts to build a strong financial planning community.

Energizing Alliances:

  • Our alliances start with our dedicated committee members. All members of this committee will develop and hone their leadership skills. To that end, the CDC has identified leadership positions within their committee.
  • As new members are added to our team, the CDC will add co-leads to existing leadership positions to foster and ensure involvement and participation. As they work strategically and tactically towards the shared vision, they also recognize natural alliances with National FPA, Member Services Committee, Public Relations Committee, Programs Committee, Partnerships Committee, Symposium Committee, Technology Committee, Colleges and Universities, and other local and national organizations we may identify that can add support or assistance with our efforts to realize our vision.
  • We will work with the Programs Committee to ensure that at least one speaker each year is geared toward career development or practice management.

Activating Transformations:

  • Scholarship Sub-Committee: Increase participation in the scholarship programs and initiate round-table conversations about stand-alone or joint funding of scholarships.
  • Education Sub-Committee: Panel at Career Day, Work with the Member Services Committee on Practice Management Forums; and Breakout session at FPA Symposium.
  • Community Sub-Committee: Work with FPA national, local members and the Member Services Committee to identify opportunities for communities of practice. Mike Miller to connect with Julie Massaro to learn how we can utilize FPA National.
  • Career Day Sub-Committee: Work with students to ensure making Career Day a valuable experience; work with planners/employers to provide access to the next generation of available talent; work with Public Relations and the PR firm in promoting Career Day 2008; and invite members from other committees to get involved in the planning and execution of Career Day 2008.

Achieving and Measuring Results:

  • Scholarship Sub-Committee: Determine viability of achieving stand-along funding, or decide to table the conversation for the time being. Award available scholarships in 2008 and develop selection criteria for each scholarship. Scholarship program will be revised, newly marketed, or eliminated based upon the past research completed. This in turn will increase participation in the scholarship programs and/or use the resources to better meet the career development needs of FPA members.
  • Education Sub-Committee: A minimum of twenty attendees at any educational breakout sessions/panels etc.
  • Community Sub-Committee: Develop start-up programs for individuals and groups to help them get groups started. Introduce a new community of practice each quarter in 2008.
  • Career Day Sub-Committee: A minimum of thirty student attendees, and ten employer interviewers. Create a timeline and template to follow in future years.
